Apple Butter Frolic, Tired of Imports, Jonesy!

Well it's Monday! I got some cleaning and laundry done this morning and then decided to head out to do some errands. While I was out I passed a country type store I hadn't been in for a while. Maybe it's me - but I'm getting tired of the stuff that is out there. So much is imported and expensive to buy but cheap in looks - Know what I mean? Anyway - I was a bit disappointed as this store used to have a higher quality of items I thought but so much was the imports now. Being a rug hooker, I was extremely disappointed to see they had "hooked-rug" rugs, pillows and items - i say this lightly as they were the cheap import. No quality at all in my opinion. Anyway - i did see one item that I had to have. Yes it's sort of cutesy but I found it fun. It was a "kit" to make a spider out of your pumpkin. The eyes, legs, and mouth are included and it is metal. So on my way home there is a farm around the corner selling pumpkins, Indian corn, hay bales, corn stalks, gourds, and the like so I stopped to get some pumpkins to make my "spider". Oh and it was the honor system - yep they are still around here - everything was priced and you put the money in a box yourself!

So here is a pic of my Spider Pumpkin - I think I am going to leave him on the table rather than put him outside - Will have to get some spider webbing and bittersweet or something to swirl around him - haven't decided yet!

Last nite I decided to try to hook - Jonesy was immediately on the bed - guess he's telling me with that tongue sticking out that no way am I hooking when he's ready to play - he is a character for sure -

I tried anyway - so here he is relaxing on my rug -

Got him off the rug and now he's in my woolies -

Finally he decided to lay back on the old quilt and watch Amazing Race with me while I hooked - Such a cutie -

I have to say - he still has big paws but he hasn't seem to grown for a while - we are wondering if he's going to stay this small! I know he's only about 6 months old and still has growing but he seemed to go like a weed and now has been at a standstill - that's okay - he's my baby any size!

On Saturday - I demonstrated rug hooking at the Apple Butter Frolic in Harleysville, PA. It's a celebration to show you what it was like living on a PA German farm.
There was a ton of food to select from - things like fresh scrapple, corn pies, sausage sammies, funnel cake, ground cherry pie, shoo fly, funny cake and more. There were a ton of demonstrations going on like shelling corn where a dog powers the treadmill, also corn binding with horse powering the treadmill, they were cutting down cornstalks with the horse, there was a display of vintage tractors and old-time farm equipment, beekeeping, quilting, fraktur painting, milk painting, and much more. Thank goodness the weather was good - it rained for about 5 minutes in the morning than the sun came out - it warmed up and there was a nice breeze!
Here's a few random pics from the day -
Oh this is the homemade ice cream I had to have later in the day (Rasperry and Vanilla) MMMM real cream!

Hard to see but this was the corn shelling with the dog -

Here's a pic right beside my table - the woman was doing frakturs -

And here's a pic on the way to work the treadmill for the corn binding -

So that's what I've been up to the last few days!
Looks like I'm getting the hairy eyeball for being on the computer when someone wants his dinenr - better go feed Jonesy before my ankles are gnawed off!

Have a wonderful week!

Joanne, your festival looks like it was a lot of fun! Next year, you'll have to take pictures of your table, preferrably with you in the picture. The picture of the ice cream looks yummy. Now I'm hungry!!!!

Hey, it looks like you had a pretty good day after all, and that is a really cute snippet bag on that ice cream picture! Looking forward to seeing you this Thursday.

That pumpkin spider is too cute!
The show at Harleyville looks nice and relaxed, not horribly crowded. Maybe Zip and I will check it out next year. He loves those old tractors. And of course, I go for the PA German food!
Are you coming to the hook-in Thurs.? I sure hope so!

The day for the Apple Butter Festival turned out to be a good day!! (do you really think some of your readers know what "scrapple" is??)..(big smile) The pumpkin spider is cute - I know how disappointing it is to go into a store with all imports (sad face) that is why we work so hard to be as handcrafted as we can. Judy
ps..hmmmm there are some very BAD witches in Hereford sorry to say!

Joanne, this fair/frolic sounds so wonderful. Many years ago, when we lived in Maine, there was a gathering called The Common Ground Fair that had lots of demonstrations of all things old. Lots of spinning, weaving, sheep - so they could show everything from the shearing to carding to spinning, etc. There could have been rug hooking but since I didn't know anything about hooking at the time, I could have walked past it and never recognized it. Even now, some 26 years later, I miss going to that fair.

How lucky for you that you not only got to go to this frolic but you also got to demonstrate hooking. Hummm, now I'm jealous.

What a great turn out. Was trying to see a close up of the fracturs to see if they were jaeri's but they look more like paper cuttings, hard to tell.

Love that spider pumpkin, what a fun idea.
