So on my way back to adopt this little guy I called him and said "stop for kitten food" - he just laughed at me.
So in less than 1/2 hour i was back home with kitten in carrier!
Okay - for those that know me - you know the story when I brought Riley home how Miles hissed and spit and growled and carried on at him and to this day - Miles still hates Riley - My reasoning was to get a playmate for Riley to take the focus off of Miles. After all Riley talks thru the window to all the neighborhood cats and Miles just growls.
Well don't you know it - Miles came right up to him - hissed and left - he doesn't even seem fazed by it. Riley (and it's been 5 hours) is totally a transformed kitty - He's hissing and spitting and making these weird noises and won't come near me. I started with introducing them - that didn't go over well so i separated them - but this little guy just wanted to explore so i've been letting him. Well I had a meltdown over the fact that Riley won't even let me hold him or talk to him and he hissed at me and tried to bite me! I really thought he would be on board with this!!!!
Well anyway - I'm praying things will get better - I know it's only the first few hours. I've let the little guy roam all over and he's just too funny - it was like he had no "getting used to me" - he runs up me to hold him and won't take a nap unless I'm holding him - he also loves to cuddle - he rolls around in my arm and lets me pet his belly (which is odd for a cat right away) He purrs and purrs and rubs and is really a little lover boy.
Right now Riley is watching his every move- i'm trying to not say anything, not pet him, and just see what they do - the little guy picked up one of Riley's favorite toys and Riley went over and smacked him - little guy smacked him back - then the hissing started. Then I don't know what happened Riley startled him and the ears went flat and the little guy got huge - so maybe i just need to let them work it out themselves. They are back to follwoing each other around and staring down each other.
Not sure what bedtime will bring - seems this little guy doesn't want to be alone. I'm sure hoping I haven't made a mistake here and hoping Riley loosens up and starts playing with him. I hate that Riley is upset but then i wonder if it's because Miles treats him like that then maybe that's what he knows.
Well anyway - here's some pics of the next guy (oh and I don't have a name for him yet ? My husband is away for the day after dropping off the kitten food - so he's thinking too!

I'm really upset about Riley but am hoping things are going to work out - hoping I did a good thing - this new guy seems so happy to have a home (oh forget to mention his cage mate got adopted while i was there so that was nice to see both of them get a good home). And did I mention I don't know if i adopted a kitten or a necklace - he loves to climb up to my chest and sit! Oh my - i forgot all about kitten claws and just how sharp they are! LOL

He is too cute. Sometimes it takes a while and then they become best friends. I was surprised with my old male, he loved black and let him even sit on him, so give it a few days.

Oh Joanne, he's absolutely adorable!!! You sure do have good taste in kittens! I'm hoping that Riley will come around but I'm sure it's heartbreaking to see his reaction. I'm sure he was just surprised. After a good night's sleep he'll probably have a fresh perspective in the morning!
Joanne, the new baby is just as precious as can be...praying it will work out as well for you as Chester and Olivia have for me...at first he was mad and scared and wanted none of it...he'd run upstairs and hide under a chair...from 3 pounds of pure energy...now, two years later they are such buddies..with only a little hissing and chasing...xxx to all the kitties...
OMG, you did it!!!
And he sure is cute! And it HAS taken the focus off Miles!
It really does take time, and if Riley is still playful, he probably won't be able to resist that kitten foolishness. It may have helped if someone else (a best friend or your DH) had brought the cat carrier into the house. That way YOU were not the guilty party. I've had cats in the house (5-8 at a time) for 40 years, and with a kitten and neutered males it usually works out, in time. Good luck! Keep us posted!
Ziggy! That's my suggestion for a name... just popped into my head. He sure is a cutie! Seems very mild manner from the pics. Hope Riley adjusts to his new buddy... in time they might become good pals!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE grey tabbies. I have owned five in my life - something about the markings and their "eye liner". He is adorable, hope it all works out and Riley finds he has a good buddy afterall.
First, you need to sell your car. It seems to have a mind of it's own if it just kept turning into the parking lot LOL.
Oh Joanne, he's too cute! I like Sharon's suggestion of Ziggy..
I hope things are better today than they were yesterday. Keep us posted!
He's ADORABLE, Joanne! And congratulations! But with his body markings, he doesn't look like a normal gray tabby. He's much prettier, or handsome, should I say.
As for the hissing, give them time. You've only just brought him home. Every time I've brought a new member of the household home, we've gone through at least a week of hissing and spitting and growling. They usually get tired and eventually learn to like and get along with their new friend. On the flip side, I've got Joey, who hates everybody. She was fine until we brought Emme home and then with Biscuit? Well, that one broke the straw on the camel. But girls tend to me more pissy anyway.
Riley should calm down. But right now, you've brought someone home who's invaded his space. Time is your best friend.
But now, you posted this yesterday. How are things going today? Any change?
As for stopping by the shelter, Gerry cringes every time I go into the adoption room at PetsMart. And he really sweats it out whenever I go to The Cat Association here in Topeka. After all, Snowy, Cricket and Joey came from the Cat Association. Biscuit and my grandson's cat, Topper, came from PetsMart. Emme was my weakness at the CFA cat show here in town. We walked in, looking for a cat tree. We came home with a huge cat tree.......and Emme!! Her breeder had two kittens that she was selling. Emme was born with a smooth coat, which made her worthless in the show world. But she was perfect to ME.
Good luck and I hope you'll keep us all up-to-date on your success!
I read once that a great thing to do is to close the kitten into a room for a day or so with food water and litterbox(and a comfy chair for you) and a basket of wool to get him started off right for sleeping accomodations, and so you can hook while you're in there....
The kitten and Riley can exchange swats under the door, but not get into any really bad situations. He is precious! And quite handsome! I'm not sure but what I'd be calling him Captain Jack Sparrow! Not really, but the other thing I wanted to say, was good for you for not adopting both of them in the cage at the same time! LOL Jo
