Warning: This is a "I'm feeling sorry for myself post" and "I'm not happy"! And no pictures!
Okay - i don't believe you can live in the States and not have heard about Hurricane Irene. I had to turn the TV off yesterday - every channel was covering it - yes it was major news but watching it scares you to pieces! My husband was being dramatic and silly about the news saying things like "We are all gonna die!" Yes to us the news seems that dramatic at times.
I'm so happy that in some areas it wasn't as powerful as predicted but it still did some damages to a lot of places, there were still some that lost their lives, and lots lost possessions and homes from water damage and whatnot - I am sad for them.
We fared pretty well - it was really windy and rainy and our surrounding roads were closed this morning and this afternoon due to flooding but where we are our basement stayed dry. And we didn't have any of the predicted tornado's touch down near us either (thank goodness!) We did lose our power today for about 7-8 hours (A call to PECO to check status said we may be without power for 1-2 weeks! Can you image!)
Anyway - I know I am very lucky to have my family and friends safe after the storm, but I'm still going to vent!
Yesterday afternoon my "Internet" went out. First I thought it was from the winds. Nope - the wireless router was working, my husband was able to get online with his laptop and desktop - so after trying everything I know of to "fix it" - nothing worked (Okay I know some things but not in depth!) So I worked on it on and off all day and night yesterday with no luck.
Got up this morning and still couldn't get it to connect - Oh joy. Well then we lost power for the next 7-8 hours until about 4:00 - Kinda eerie - The only sounds were the wind and rain - there wasn't much light because of the weather so what do you? My husband slept - Me, I was going to hook but it was way too dark in the hooking room, so i read a book as close to the slider in the living room as I could. It's funny how we depend on our electric - I thought I would make another cup of coffee - nope can't do; then I thought I would make BLT's for lunch - yep can't do that either. Every room i walked in (even knowing) the electric was out I kept switching on light switches (duh!) and we have three bathrooms - but not one with a window - so that was dark too! Oh my! Anyway - once the electric came on I went back to work on my computer. Still nothing- then I ran the virus check - found out there were two "threats" got that cleaned off - still couldn't get online - then all of sudden my computer locked me out and I couldn't even get in - It has the password thing to sign on (never wanted that anyway) but kept saying my password was incorrect - no it wasn't - after 18 times of trying, I I pull out the booklets and call the computer place.
Okay - finally get a gentlemen (from another country that starts with an "I" - and I'm sure I was in another country - and NOPE, asking for an English speaking person like that email tells you doesn't work), we get down to business. Won't bore you with the details cause I wouldn't be able to tell you what I did - but nearly 2 hours later my computer has now been re-set back to original settings and it works - and that was at 9:00 p.m. At least the third gentlemen I spoke with for the majority of the time spoke English pretty clear (unlike what I was hearing in the background) so that made it easier for me - especially since computer lingo is foreign enough for me.
Okay this translates to I LOST EVERYTHING - all my pictures, all my files, etc. I have to start from scratch - the only thing I installed so far was my online service! I still have to install my Kodak thing so I can download pics, and a few others things - Just don't have it in me to do that tonight. Of course I don't back anything up so it's my own fault, right? Thank goodness I have the blog to re-capture some of the pics - I always keep pics of my rugs for ideas (all gone) and of course my boys (all gone!).
So I won't cry over spilt milk but just move one. It's gone and now I vented!
Hope everyone had a SAFE and dry weekend - now to catch up on emails and blog posts!

I am with you on the hype on TV and you can't stop some people from being dumb.
so sorry you had the computer issues.
Cathy
Oh no Joanne! That doesn't sound good about losing your photos! I don't back anything up either...... I think about it.... that is as far as I get! Just too much time is spent on these computers! I sure hope things go better for you this week and remember you're not alone! You still have your furrrrry little boys to cheer you up!!
Glad you made it through the Hurricane as the news people did make it sound like the entire east coast was going to vanish!! Maybe it takes that these days to save peoples lives.....
Interesting isn't it being without power for a few hours. I think the companies who sell generators probably will make out good. Maybe they will be hiring! ( just trying to look at the bright side LOL!)
Sleep well for tomorrow is another day!
Hugs!

ohhhh, Joanne. Doesn't sound like a fun weekend, but things will get better. Hope you feel better for venting.
Oh goodness girl...what a day! I'm very spoiled to electricity and we were without it a few time over the years for weeks at a time due to ice. Makes me cranky to say the least. Sure hope this week gets better for you!
Joanne ~
I hope today is a much better day for you! I'm glad you survived Irene with no major problems. I was getting tired of hearing about Irene and I don't even have a TV to watch.
I am SO SORRY about your computer problems. Maybe if you take it to a computer shop they can recover all the lost files. They were able to do that for me when I got a virus and it appeared I had lost everything and it cost less than fifty bucks.
HUGS!!!
Lauren
So frustrating for you - the computer issues and the phone call to fix. Glad you and yours are fine after Irene but i hear you. 48 hours of nothing else but Irene info. My peace was broken when Philadelphia airport reopened and airplanes starting circling again. Funny about the drama, we thought, record heat, record rain, record snow,an earthquake, a hurricane ....what next locusts???
What a time you had :(. You are better than me with the computer. I still would have been at a loss. I hope you wake up to sunny skies and frisky furry friends to make you smile :) (say that 3 x's fast lol)
OMG! The losing of all your computer stuff is just horrifying! Bad enough not to have electricity and all the other 'can't do' things that go with it!
Zip and I were so sick of all the media hype over Irene. All it does is gets people in a panic. The 'might happens' were worse than the actuality.
I do believe in heeding warnings when they make sense. That's why I spent the last two hours backing up my photos and other stuff on disks. Thanks, Joanne!!!
Joanne, what a time you've had! So sad about your computer - I know that I would hate to loose my pictures and yet I don't back up. Glad you came thru Irene in good shape. We also lost power for a while but all is well.
So sorry to hear of all the problems you had with your computer and the effects of Irene. I hope that you can recover some of your photos somehow. I have to put my photos on a DVD but I keep procrastinating about it too.
I'm thankful that you made it through the storm safely though. I couldn't sleep for most of the night because of the high wind. Luckily only a tiny branch broke on my tree in the front yard. The wind is still blowing but not as hard. JB
Bless your little heart.............
BLESS YOUR LITTLE HEART!
So sorry to hear about all your computer woes. Been there - done that - cried over it all. Then you pick up and go on.
Guess you can feel the big hug coming thru the lines...........
One thing a dear friend once told me...........you can't erase the wonderful memories within your mind. That's stuck with me.
Let us know if we can help with anything or send you any links.
Love and hugs!
P.S. I'm sick about all the media hype, too. We are convinced it is just hype to make us spend money, none of us has to waste!
Hi Joanne, Computer problems are the pits.No electricity is also bad too. We were without electricity for over a week and water when wildfires came through Crest. It was the pits. The generator can be so loud. We ended up buying old lanterns as back up now. Hurricane Irene had media hype but I think if they hadn't done that people would be upset since there were deaths. They can't win. Better safe then sorry.
So sorry Joanne!! What a frustrating and disappointing experience for you!! I am so computer challenged and if it weren't for my brilliant hubby Jeff, I would not even BE on the internet!!
Hopefully you can get some info from some savvy blogging buddies (wish I could count myself in that group!) to try to replace some pics and other info!
Big Hugs from WA!!
Julie
Exactly WHY last Christmas I asked for an External Hard Drive...I know your frustration....can't live without them but some days it is hard to live with them (I was talking about computers not the hubbies)!!!!
I have some pictures of rugs...let me know what you need !!!
I agree with you that the media totally hyped this storm out of proportion. We lost power for about 26 hours, which rotted given that no electricity means no water from the well. But, despite some really impressive wind, it wasn't so bad. I'm sorry about your photos. I'm learning about Google docs at my work and saving pictures and files to google might save you in the long run. It's called "saving to the cloud"...that outside of our computer space in the cosmos. It's a thought. You make me realize that I need to back up!
