I was demonstrating rug hooking at the Apple Butter Frolic in Harleysville. I think it was the 38th year they were celebrating this! Wow!
They held it at the Heritage Center this year (previous years it was held at a working farm in the area!)
What a turn out! Even though it was overcast and chilly and the ground was wet (can you say it got muddy?) people came out! Here are a few pics of the day - It was hard getting some shots with all the people!
Basket making...
Caning...
Beekeeping...
I forget what this is - cooking the apples for the applesauce making tent? Or Cider pressing?
There was an area where you could pet farm animals - this little fellow was really friendly - we had a nice chat...
The farm hand's tent where they were served a "working lunch" - and the other side was "Grandmother's kitchen" where the food was prepared for the volunteers working the farm - they were also making sauerkraut and other things...
There was a horse and cart giving rides and also a gentlemen was walking around with a smaller tent and a B. Mountain Dog giving little kids rides...
Never saw a chicken like this - Oh my - this is a called a "Silky Chicken" and forgive - I forget her "name" but she was so friendly you could just pick her up like a cat or a dog and pet her - and yes she was very silky to the touch! So funny!
Wagon wheel making...
There was so much more going on - tractors and plowing and leather making, fraktur painting, lots of food tents (the big item is scrapple on a big chunk of bread and apple butter spread atop! Not for me but my goodness everyone was eating it!) Oh and ground cherry pie too was a big favorite!
I was in the tent by the sheep herding. We had rug braiding, flax making, spinning and tape making under our tent. Had to laugh at the sheep - they had demonstrations with "herding" sheep with border collies and in between the schedule all four would stand side-by-side and their heads would turn in unison looking at things - they looked like statues! I asked someone about it and they thought maybe it was their way to protect themselves from predators since they weren't in their normal environment. Still, they looked so cute! My pic didn't turn out!
They had an apple baking contest - you could submit in Cakes, Pies, or Muffins/Breads - I made and submitted my Apple Dapple Cake - I won 3rd place (and yes there was more than 3 cakes submitted! Someone asked me that! LOL)
I won a basket of Apple Butters (Peach, Blueberry, and Apple and some Honey and Maple Sugar)
It's finally starting to look like Fall around here - there is a chill in the air (Oh so much nicer to sleep!) however I haven't given up my flip flops yet! There isn't frost yet!
Thanks for the well wishes on my eyes. It's been a week now and the drops are helping some - still blurry but it's a clearer blur if that makes sense. I'm really hoping that after another week it will keep improving! Will find out when i got back to the doc next week.
Well my Riley is wanting his rubdown - he keeps waking across my lap and keyboard and wants my attention - oh well - he's so cute - so what are you going to do!

Love the smaller fairs like that, we have a couple, but never make them. What a great prize to win, nothing like homemade jellies.
Debbie
